Camp Morton

default (1)

This was one of the Union armies 8 prisoner of war camps and named after Governor Oliver P. Morton who presided over Indiana throughout the US Civil War.

The camp was located in an area bounded by East 16th Street on the south, East 22nd Street on the north, North Pennsylvania Street on the west, and Central Avenue on the east. In 1891 the property was sold and developed into a residential neighborhood known as Morton Place, a part of the Herron-Morton Place Historic District.

We are trying to find a historian well versed in the prison camp and will bring you more information when it is available.
