There is rumor about a mass grave of Confederate Prisoners of War in Jeffersonville, Indiana For now, this is just a rumor and internet legend. Members of the SCV will work to determine if Confederates were ever held at this camp and whether or not they died while imprisoned and where they are buried.
A little history about this Union Army camp reveals that it was a major staging area for Union troops as they prepared to enter the mixed border State of Kentucky and the Western Theater in the Civil War. The camp was built in the area of modern day Clarksville, Indiana. The reason it was built north of the Ohio river is to prevent Kentucky from being able to use it should they fall to the Confederacy.
There was a hospital at this camp originally before the hospital was built at Jeffersonville, Indiana. The hospital in Jeffersonville was orginally established by Jesse D. Bright, a STRONG Confederate sympathizer.
As soon as we can, the SCV members will update this Blog.
